Omniterrum proudly presents: Lander & May
A small, artisan globe making company working from studios in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight (U.K.).
All globes are handmade, using traditional, high quality methods of the great English Globe makers from the 18th and 19th centuries. Spheres of yesteryear made by Malby, Newton and Kirkwood, which are not coincidently some of the most sought after models today, desired by discerning collectors and museums alike. Lander & May continues the classic English tradition of Globe making.
Artisan: – Definition –
Something that is made by hand, by a skilled craftsman, using non-mechanized methods.
All Lander & May globes are handmade, following the age-old traditional method of making a papier mache ball skimmed with plaster for a smooth robust finish, then covered with printed paper globe gores (sometimes color printed, sometimes printed black and white then hand tinted), then sealed and varnished. It is a slow, meticulous process, taking time and care with the result of creating high quality models, future heirlooms for generations to last.
Only using British components for all globes, everything needed has been sourced within the UK. Even the stands are created by skilled, local wood-turners.There is no presence of low quality, plastic mass production!
