The exquisite Paris Globe maker Delamarche & Dien was founded by Charles François Delamarche (1740-1817) who entered the globe industry as successor to the Robert de Vaugondy family of map and globe makers to King Louis XVI. Delamarche obtained the shops of many of his local competitors in Paris, which enabled him to produce globe models in many different sizes. He also republished many Robert de Vaugondy maps and globes. Charles worked with Charles Dien, a cartographer celebrated for his attention to detail and knowledge of the newest explorations and discoveries of his time. Charles (1809-1870) ,Son of Charles Dien, sr., followed his father’s footsteps, also becoming an terrestrial astronomic and cosmographic cartographer, who after 1840 collaborated with Nagy Karoly, published Hungarian lunar globes; called himself Dien Karoly. Contributed a lunar globe to the first pair of Hungarian globes. In 1817 Felix Delamarche, son of Charles, took over the business which stayed in the family until 1847, when taken over by Grosselin. In the tradition of this fine Globe maker family, he continued producing the ever so delicate engraved and exquisitely designed masterpieces, based on the work of Charles Dien. This elegant French terrestrial Globe, dated on the cartouche 1849 is such masterpiece. The delicately engraved and hand colored map allows one to view a world still being explored and conquered. What is to become Australia is still shown as New Holland and Van Diemens’ land is shown instead of Tasmania. A pre Livingston, virgin Africa documents how unknown its interior is to the European explorers. A young America has yet to conquer its own land. Alaska is marked to be Russian America. Results of the February 2 1848 Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty ending the Mexican –US war is evident as Mexico ceded the Texas-claimed areas as well as a large area of land (consisting of all of present-day California, Nevada, and Utah, most of Arizona, and portions of Colorado New Mexico). Oregon Territory ( organized in 1848)is identified , including present-day Idaho, northwestern Montana, Oregon, Washington, and western Wyoming. In Europe one can view historic Empires, many of them just about to form or merge. There is the Prussia, still independent from a grouping called Germany as what is to become the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1867) is part of the German Confederation. The Turkish Empire is shown at its height, reaching well into Europe what is modern day Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. A true artifact, entertaining the disconcerting historian, while displaying beautiful, classic French elegance.  Ever had the desire to have ownership of an object as French Royalty did?
