This sophisticated sphere combines clean, minimalistic design with intriguing political display. High noon of the Cold War era is clearly present on the map but also marked on the legend, as this Globe is identified to have been produced in former West Germany. Further more the UAR is identified, a venture that lasted from only 1958-61. When illuminated, the sphere offers an elegant ambiance. In addition it reveals elevations and depths of the oceans, not visible when the light is turned off. About the manufacture: Little is known about JRO, a Munich, W-Germany based Globe maker. It appears to have been a post WW2 start-up and models can only be found until the 1970s. Which makes one believe for the company to have been active over a period of only 20 years. Description: 12 individual gores are applied over a c 10 inch diameter orb. Mounted into a stamped numeric half meridian, made of metal and finished in a matte gold. The half meridian is attached to a metal, 3 legged base in a classic Mid Century Modern, minimalistic design. The base is also finished in matte gold.Total height is about 14 inches. All language is in German, as is the plug. A converter plug can be purchased at any larger retail store. Condition: The artifact is exceptionally well preserved with only minor scuffing and soiling to base and orb. Lighting is functional. Age of the globe has been based on political borders displayed, which are as follows: United Arab Republic which lasted from 1958-61 is visible, a venture between Egypt and Syria. Colonies like French West Africa and the Belgian Congo are no longer visible. These colonies ceased to exist in 1960. A post WW2 Europe is visible. This exceptionally well maintained artifact is an original piece of a politically important moment in time.
