A handsome 1956 Illuminated Glass Globe & original Atlas

A handsome 1956 Illuminated Glass Globe & original Atlas

$295.00
Offering a splendid, warm glow when illuminated, this globe will magical transform any setting placed in. A fine map with black instead of the more common blue oceans offers to share the political history of 1956. More likely one of the last glass globes made by Crams as they began to produce economically more efficient plastic models by 1959. Glass globes are quite artisan pieces, as each paper gore representing the map had to be applied by hand. This craftsmanship is a skill of the past as today most globes are mass manufactured. This model is accompanied by it's original 1956 Cram's NEW MODERN Atlas. Well maintained, the book doesn't just offer maps of the cold war era but shares the cultural impression America has of the world. Black and white photos representing a global diversity of cultures and architecture are also included. The glass globe itself has a 12" diameter, covered in 12 individual, hand applied paper gores representing the map. Mounted into a brass full meridian gimbal style and attached to a wooden base in two tone laminated finish. Lighting is functional. There is slight corrosion on the gimbal mount, scuffing to the base and a repair to the map (see pictures, more available). Due to this but still quite a fine piece , we are offering this model at a reduced price of $295 — KS611CR56BLKO - SOLD
