An exceptionally rare c 1880 French petite terrestrial Globe by Emile Bertaux of Paris. The ever so delicately engraved map of this petite artifact is a testament to the superb engraving skills of Emile Bertaux. His excellent craftsmanship was well recognized within his time, as he also published models for various globe makers, including Dien, Dubail and Eichen’s globes for planetariums, as well as the lunar and Mars globes created from Camille Flammarion’s discoveries. This fine artifact celebrates French styled elegance to the upmost detail, offering a baluster turned ebonized base with a brass accent piece. This rare artifact documents empires long before the dismay of their existence. Imperial kingdoms including the British, the Austria-Hungarian and the Ottoman Empire are shown. Metropolitan centers of the past such as Constantinople, Christiana and St. Petersburg are visible. Mr. Livingston has yet to complete the exploration of Africa nor have colonies been established. It has yet to be discovered that Lake Edward is an independent body of water, not part of Lake Albert (1876). Even though the map is simplified, it identifies human tribes, from the Hottentotten in South Africa to Eskimos in Alaska. Political borders and capitols are also documented. We believe this to be a very early model by Bertaux, as he was active from c 1880-1900. Greece is shown to have gained independence (1875) though India is not identified as an Empire (1877), Lake Edward is not documented (1876)nor are Serbia, Monte Negro or Romania (1878). The globe consists of 12 individual hand applied paper gores and two polar calottes over a plaster sphere. The base consists of a baluster turned and ebonized wooden base with a brass accent piece. Diameter of the globe is about 3.25 inches with a total height of about 5.5 inches.
