$2,498.00
George F Cram, a world traveler and Renaissance man of the nineteenth century published travel magazines and Atlases in Chicago during the later part of the 1800s. While Crams today is known for globe production, thus was not involved in actual manufacturing until 1932, according to Bill Douthit, former owner and retired CEO. This unusual artifact documents the superb craftsmanship of Rand McNally, one of the great Chicago Globe makers of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and whom George F Cram outsourced to have this globe made. Attention to detail is evident throughout the map as finest etchings allow to present physical characteristics of regions. The unusual golden coloring of the map contributes to a warm patina. The plaster orb is covered with twelve individual, hand applied paper gores and mounted into a metal full meridian. Diameter of the orb is 12 inches. The base is a beautiful representation of the Jugenstil -Art Nouveau movement, providing a metal base with sophisticated yet playful elegance. At a total height of 32 inches, this fine artifact will demand attention without occupying too much space. With this fine globe you will also receive a facsimile of the original advertisement, offering it for $17.00 USD (in 1890). This artifact offers visual history by displaying Empires one can only read of today. Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empire, German colonies, Constantinople, Christiana , St. Petersburg and a young United States with Indian Territory (1890) are identified, just to name a few. Africa still documents the Matabele and Khamas tribes as Kingdoms (part of Rhodesia effective 1895) in addition to Congo Free State and more. This globe has been well maintained. Even though not perfect, it is in very good condition for its age. Colors are rich, details crisp. Soiling is minimal but there are two areas to be addressed: A tear in Africa that has been repaired and a second, well done repair south of the cartouche. See photos. This specific model is of up most rarity. Difficult to obtain, it’s “cousin” can be viewed at the Globe museum of the National Library of Austria. $2,498 - Item #: 712CRRMCN90 - SOLD
