The space age era produced some of the most unique Planetary models, including this specific globe. Having equipped a standard model with a “satellite orbit demonstrator”, Replogle ensured to offer the newest version of a globe (as of 1959). The “orbit demonstrator” consists of two wooden beads on a metal ring which is attached to the meridian of the Globe. This feature allowed demonstrating how Satellites circled the Earth….at least that was the marketing statement. Haven been developed at the beginning of the “space race” era, this globe gained quite extensive popularity in the 50’s and 60’s. With the revival of the Eames and Modernist styles, the Globe has become a unique, sought after collector’s piece. This particular artifact is exceptionally well preserved and complete. It is rare to find locate a complete model with orbit demonstrator intact as this one. Politically one can view the rise of the Cold War as Germany is divided and the short lived venture between Syria and Egypt, the United Arab Republic is documented as are the last colonies including French West Africa and the Belgian Congo.
