A mod inflatable Globe circa 1953
A mod inflatable Globe circa 1953

We found this fantastic model by Hammonds to be quite a novelty; it is made of thick vinyl and inflatable. In addition the orb can be illuminated. That being said, one should do so with caution as vinyl does melt … This is also the reason for these 1950’s Space Age Globes to be quite rare...
During the 1950’s the globe industry experimented with many new materials to produce more economical models. Some very unusual globes appeared, including this one. Soon after the first few globes were sold it was apparent to be an engineering disaster and the line was discontinued within 3 years of production.
So we would like to take this opportunity to advise:
Turn on the light for only a few hours at a time and only use low wattage light bulbs...
The globe itself is made of very thick vinyl and can be de- and inflated via valve. We inflated the globe for 21 days and so far no loss of air. The orb offers classic retro graphics and the base add a nice Mid Century Flair. Diameter of the globe is 18 inches with a total height of about 24 inches. He base is made of tubular hollow metal. In overall very well preserved condition. The age is based on the political display: Korea is divided, Vietnam is not. French West Africa is visible.
If you are looking for the rare, funky and unusual, this globe will meet your needs!
