Replogle 1930 – current Chicago Luther Replogle, a former sales rep for Weber Costello, began making globes in his basement with imported British map gores. The breakthrough for his company occurred in 1932, when he obtained the contract to produce commutative globes for the worlds fair in Chicago in 1933, distributed by Marshall Fields & Co. During WW II Replogle did not keep up with the constant change of political borders and continued printing the maps of 1939 through the early 1940s. However, to encourage customers to continue purchasing his globes, he offered coupons for globes to be updated for a minimal fee once WW2 has ended and political borders have been established. In the 1950’s Reploge ventured out into producing a few very unique globes, such as the Surprise Globe, the Wonder World, as well as a Magnetic Air Race Globe Game and the Quiz Globe. It was an attempt to expand sales into the toy market while competing with well known Children’s Tin Globe makers such as J.Chein and Ohio Art. Until purchased by the Herff Jones Corporation in 2010, Replogle became one of the worlds largest globe makers. Description: The Globe itself is a Relief Globe made of pasteboard and mounted onto a four-prong metal base. Diameter of the globe is 12” with a total height of about 22”. The lamp is attached to the Globe (or rather, its arm is attached to the base and comes through the orb). The lampshade is made of metal as well. Condition: The Globe is in good condition. Colors are brilliant, details are crisp.Minimal soiling, some scuffing throughout, especially at the equator. Minor pitting on base and lampshade. Please view pictures for details! The age of the Globe has been based on the display of political borders, which are as follows: Europe: Europe is shown in its post WW2 stage; Germany is divided into East and West, showing Berlin and Bonn as capitols. Once East and West were re-united, Berlin again became the Capital of both Germanys. Today’s independent countries such as Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and many others are showing to be part of the former USSR (dissolved in 1991).Yugoslavia is still visible. Middle East-Asia: Korea is divided (1953). Former Indo China is also shown in its new countries, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Vietnam is shown to be divided. Sri Lanka is still displayed as Ceylon. Africa: French West and Equatorial Africa as well as the Belgian Congo still exist (1960). The unification between Egypt and Syria known as the United Arab Republic is displayed (1958-61). $199 — Item : 0313REPLMP58
