A blast from the past to view the world (and the stars) RETRO STYLE!
In the 1950’s Reploge ventured out into producing a few unique tin globes, including the Surprise Globe offered here as well as a Magnetic Air Race Globe Game and the Quiz Globe.
With these unique and colorful models the manufacture attempted to compete with well known Children’s Tin Globe makers such as J.Chein and Ohio Art. However, Replogle did not make these Children’s models for very long. It is difficult to locate these models, as they had to endure (and survive!) child’s play.
This Globe is in exceptionally good condition and even includes original accessories: travel maps of Europe, Asia, South and North America. On the back of each map are interesting factoids and related question and answer games listed. Also included is a celestial map, explaining constellations and how to identified them. Some of the maps identify a print date of 1954.
The round cardboard disc functions as a stabilizer to hold maps and crayons.
The orb itself is made of hollow spun tin covered with a colorful litho map and black oceans. The sphere is mounted into a base also made of tin and finished in a bold tomato red. The “surprise” is the interior of the globe which represents the deep blue celestial skies, identifying zodiacs and constellations in a light blue with yellow and white details.
Diameter of the orb is 6 inches with a total height of 8 inches.
Condition:
The Globe has been maintained extremely well! Colors are vivid; details are crisp, no sign of corrosion or dents. Maps are show age appropriate wear. The map of Europe has a corner missing.
Political borders displayed are as of 1949, copyright of the Instruction pamphlet states 1954.
