A fine Celestial Globe with Horizon Ring c 1940s
A fine Celestial Globe with Horizon Ring c 1940s
$595.00
A rare model, edited by Commander Stubbs RNR (Royal Navy) for the educational market.
Commander Stubbs worked on several star and celestial related projects with Hammonds, including educational publications, focused on celestial and navigational subjects. However, WW2 interrupted the co-operation, tragically Stubbs was killed in the war on a mine sweeping mission.
In map and mount, this is an exquisite model. The celestial map is not ornate as common celestial maps, displaying zodiacs in a more figural manner. Instead the map is strictly scientific with straight connecting lines.
Combined with a very minimalistic mount, this model offers a clean, modern statement.
The mount was outsourced and produced by Denoyer-Geppert. Hammonds mostly produced literature related to terrestrial and celestial spheres and outsourced most of the globe manufacturing to either Denoyer Geppert or Weber Costello.
This celestial model is most difficult to obtain and yet to be sold in a public auction. Similar models have been offered in auctions and fine antique dealers for up to $4500.
This is a splendid opportunity to obtain the celestial sphere as part of your collection for a fraction of the retail price.
The 12 inch diameter globe is covered with 12 individual hand applied paper gores, representing the celestial map and mounted into a full meridian made of metal with copper and bronze finish. The meridian is removable from the stationary fork, which connects to a maple wood base. The horizon ring has the same coloring as the base. A cartouche identifies Hammonds and Stubbs RNR, the metal fork DG for Denoyer Geppert. Diameter including horizon ring is 17.5 inches with a total height of about 18 inches.
In superb condition, minimal wear and soiling to the horizon ring, the orb and mount are outstanding, extremely well preserved!
