An exquisite 1880 Juvet Time Globe (Clock)

An exquisite 1880 Juvet Time Globe (Clock)

$7,500.00
While several clockmakers manufactured time globes, this particular example was made by a man who specialized in them, and who was instrumental in their development. Louis P. Juvet (1838-1930) came from his birthplace of Switzerland to New York in 1864. He soon began receiving patents for his work in time globes. Around 1878 he formed Juvet & Company with James Arkell and A.G. Richmond, and they started manufacturing time globes in Canajoharie, NY. Unfortunately, their business did not last long, because a fire destroyed their factory in 1886. As a result, Juvet time globes are very rare. (National Watch and Clock Museum) A time globe is exactly that: a globe that tells time also known as a world clock. A brass movement inside the 12 inch diameter globe operates the clock and also makes the globe spin. It completes a 360° rotation once every twenty-four hours, imitating the rotation of the Earth. The clock winds by turning the metal full meridian where it connects to the base and the time can be read at the beveled etched glass dial above the North Pole. Hour and minute markings on the horizon ring (with numeric hour display) help give the correct time for any location on Earth. The entire globe is mounted onto an ebonized baluster turned wooden base . Information on the globe reflects circa 1880, which is also the patent date. Dakota has not yet been divided into North and South (1889), no German colonies in Africa or Congo State (1884-5). Unfortunately the clockwork is not functional. However, given the fact these exceptional pieces are rather exquisite and tend to fetch on an average of $11,000 (non-working clock work) - $23,000 at respectable auction houses…one may consider to have the clock work restored. This is an exceptionally handsome piece, with a total diameter (horizon ring included) of 16 inches and majestic height of about 26.5 inches. As mentioned, the clock does not work but overall this model is well preserved for it's age. Rubbing, minor soiling and scuffing throughout, rust spotting to the horizon ring. Details are crisp, colors have a perfect patina. $7,500 - Item #: MH411JUV1880 - SOLD
