Remarkable details of Human advancement in exploration and technology are documented. The first under-water cable lines between the American and European Continent (laid by Maury) are shown with year of completion of 1865 and 1866.
A very young United States is shown, still lacking many States and just having survived the Civil War. Empires of the past are shown, including the British and Russian Empire. The Austro- Hungarian Empire has yet to be established (1868) as well as many other nations. Sweden and Norway is one, Finland is part of the Russian Empire.
The Congo River has been discovered but yet to be completely explored. There are still many blank areas on this map, especially in Africa and the South Pole, waiting to be conquered by man.
This globe is truly a remarkable piece of history.
The Globe shows a patent date of November 24th, 1868 and carries the initial J for Joseph, who was the founder of the Schedler Globe Company.
A paste board and plaster sphere covered by 12 individual, hand laid paper gores and two polar calottes. The orb is mounted dowel style onto a cast iron base with ornate Art Nouveau details.Diameter of this globe is 6 inches with a total height of about 12 inches. Given its age, this globe is in very good condition and provides a nicely aged patina with crisp details. Some soiling is visible throughout. Colors are well preserved. The mount is also in good condition.
