1949 Weber Costello Aviation Globe with Black Oceans.
This aviation globe is a superb American Art Deco statement, combining form and function at its best.
Until post WW1, the American Style was to follow the traditional design of the European Mother countries. However, influenced by the Art Deco Movement of France and the clean Geometric Bauhaus Development in Germany, US Design began to have a direction of its own, the American Modern aka Machine Age. Tear Drop and Bullet –shaped aerodynamic designs were not just used on forms of transportation but daily used objects, from vacuum cleaners to cars…and this terrestrial globe.
A superb example of the Machine Age Era,
this object de Art consists of a classic streamline designed cast metal base in form of a stylized airplane, paying homage to the age of aviation.
Description:
The 12 inch diameter orb is made of pasteboard, mounted into a hollow metal stamped half meridian with polished chrome finish. Oceans on the map are black rather than the more common green and blue. Countries are colored in various greens, gold and orange tones. Note the Deco font used.
The globe is mounted onto an airplane styled base, made of metal and finished in chrome. Total height is about 15.5 inches.
Condition:
Colors are bold, details crisp. Some wear around the equator. The chrome finish on the base has slightly oxidized and is rather matte, does not offer a brilliant shine. Orb may not be original to the base but a later model.
Age of the globe are based on the political borders displayed:
Europe is post WW2, Germany is not yet divided.
Israel is present (1948), Korea is not yet divided into North and South at the 38th parallel (1953)
