Exquisite Hammond's Celestial Globe; Circa 1940

Exquisite Hammond's Celestial Globe; Circa 1940

$625.00

An exquisite celestial model, produced in the 1930s or early 1940s as a collaboration between Hammonds, Denoyer-Geppert and edited by Commander Stubbs RNR (Royal Navy) for the educational market. Commander Stubbs worked on several star and celestial related projects with Hammonds, including educational publications, focused on celestial and navigational subjects. However, WW2 interrupted the cooperation. Tragically, Commander Stubbs was killed in the war on a mine sweeping mission.

The superb celestial map of this fine artifact is not ornate as common celestial maps, which display zodiacs in a more figural manner. Instead the map is strictly scientific with straight connecting lines. Combined with a minimalistic, hollow spun metal base, this model offers a clean, modern design of understated elegance. The 12 inch diameter orb is covered with 12 individual hand applied paper gores, representing the celestial map and mounted onto a simple metal base. Total height is about 17 inches.

Most examples of this model have a Denoyer-Geppert overlay on the cartouche, but this one does not. That indicates it was made early in the production run. The Denoyer-Geppert logo can be seen on the full meridian and on the time dial.

A fine conversation starter, it will awake curiosity in any setting! Overall very well preserved with less than expected wear in form of scuffing and soiling, offering a perfectly aged patina with its warm finish. This artifact can also be viewed in museums and institutions, including the National Library of Austria’s Globe Museum in Vienna as well as the Maritime Museum in London. A splendid opportunity to obtain a true museum artifact.
