Until the 1930's, the American style was to follow the traditional design of the major European powers. However, influenced by the Art Deco Movement of France and the clean Geometric Bauhaus Development in Germany, US Design began to find a direction of its own; the Machine Age. The movement was based around aerodynamic shapes and lots of chrome! Teardrop and bullet shaped designs were not just used on forms of transportation but on household items objects as well, from vacuum cleaners to flashlights… and the mounting of this globe. Consisting of a classic streamline designed chrome base, this artifact offers a stunning representation of the American Machine Age.
This fine Weber Costello model stands out, combining form and function at its best. Rarely to be found intact due to its fragile design, this Machine Age era piece is a true museum artifact. In fact, the same model is part of the collection at the National Library of Austria Globe Museum. To further illustrate how rare this globe is, there are no records of any sales in public auction houses and we have not been able to offer this model for sale in over six years!
The orb consists of pasteboard and offers a map displaying political borders of the mid 1930's. The orb is well preserved and shows almost zero wear in form of scuffing or soiling. Mounted into a full meridian with chrome finish, which attaches to an exquisitely designed teardrop base.
The Age of the Globe has been Determined by Political Borders Displayed, Which are as Follows:
The pre war map of the world is fairly straightforward to date as the 1930's were a turbulent time. Constantinople has become Istanbul (1930), Japan has invaded Manchuria and renamed it Manchukuo (1931), both Saudi Arabia and Iraq are independent (1932), and Persia-Iran are dually labeled (1935?). To further cement the date as being 1934-35 Italy has not yet claimed their stake to Ethiopia (1936), nor has Burma separated India (1937).
The 12 paper gores are in remarkably good shape for their age with only minor wear. There is a small section of equator tape that has a little wear and is clearly shown in the photos. The orb has been professionally cleaned and waxed, which will help keep it protected for many years to come. The base consists of cast metal with a superb machine age bullet design. Like the meridian, the base is finished in chrome and shows some age-related dark spots. Diameter of the orb is 12 inches; total height of the object is about 17 inches.
If you are looking for the rarely obtainable design statement, this Machine Age artifact is for you!
