Rare mechanical crank machine age prototype c 1925 anonymous
$1,895.00
During the 1920s ingenuity and entrepreneurism was rampant. The machine age was in full force, introducing new, mechanically driven products every day. In the "world of globes" the puzzle globe was introduced as was the "Indexed Globe" we are also offering. Many models never passed the prototype stage, most faltered latest at the beginning of the great depression.
The manufacture of this artifact was more likely no different. It very well may be a handcrafted prototype as we have never seen another model alike. However, we have been unable to located the patent or identify the manufacture's name.
The orb is a 12 inch diameter weber costello model, displaying post ww1 borders, including Constantinople (changed to Istanbul 1930) and Leningrad (1925).
The base and mechanism however are unique.
Mounted into a non numeric solid copper half meridian, the orb can be tilted via crank mechanism (see picture). The base and handle consist of solid brass as does the contraption representing the what we speculate to be equator?.
A very heavy wooden base ensures stability to the artifact.
It is fully functional, has a total height of about 25 inches and is very attention demanding when displayed!
There is some wear throughout, the metals have darkened with age and there appears to be some cosmetic restoration to the orb itself as well as the wooden base.
It does not from it functionality.
Upmost magnificent, in display as in rarity.
