The minimalistic approach of this superb artifact offers a dramatic design, combining warm colored lands with cool, polished chrome and simplistic black ebonized base.
An example of superb craftsmanship, the map of the globe offers interesting details. Colored in warm golden tones and unusual purple, metropolitan centers of the past are shown as they enter a modern era under a new name, such as Constantinople becoming Istanbul (1930).
In addition the globe offers the political display of a Chinese Region occupied by Japan (Manchuria aka Manchukuo 1932).
Even though it’s the era of the Great Depression, it is the calm before the storm of World War 2 in Europe.
A superb feast for the eye and the mind, this is an exceptionally rare piece in design and coloring.
The globe itself is covered with 12 individual paper gores over a plaster orb.
The mounting is dowel-style and consisted of a chrome finished connector and a wooden, ebonized base. Diameter of the globe is 12 inches with a total height of about 16.5 inches. This is a very heavy globe.
In fine condition with less than age appropriate soiling. No loss of map but some rubbing (see photos). A repaired indentation, located south of Madagascar, circular with a 0.5 inch diameter. The mounting is very good condition though some of the ebonized finish has worn over the years.
A fine, sophisticated artifact.
