This attractive Modelis a splendid representation of the Art Nouveau- Jugendstil - Victorian style with its playful details and ornate, coppered cast iron mounting.
Even though the label identifies Hammond on its cartouche, it is only a label over the manufactures original label. Hammonds had always sold, but never actually produced terrestrial or celestial spheres. This particular model was made by Weber Costello. Weber Costello was one of the finest Globe manufactures of the early 20 century. The art of hand applying paper gores to an orb are demonstrated at its best, as all are perfectly aligned, making the map appear almost seamless. Even though Weber Costello produced most of their own maps, the one on this globe are are imported from G.W. Bacon & Co of London, England. Known for their superb engraving skills and attention to detail combined with Weber Costello’s beautiful mount makes this sphere a desirable collector pieces for any globe enthusiast and certainly one of our favorite pieces.
Note the stamp on the South Polar Region, identifying the date of 8-2-1929. Quite exceptional!
More about Weber Costello:
Weber Costello Co 1907- c 1960- C.F. Weber & Co c 1900-1907- A.H. Andrews & Co 1865-c1900 Chicago
A.H. Andrews & Co sold the Globe manufacturing branch to C.F. Weber & Co. at the turn of the century, who marketed the globes as “C.F. Weber & Co, successor to A.H. Andrews and Co, Chicago”. Around 1907 the name changed to the Weber Costello Company. Weber Costello continued production of globes until the early 1960’s. In addition to its own models, the company also produced models for some of the other Chicago Globe makers such as Rand McNally, Nystrom, Denoyer-Geppert and Cram’s.
In 1942 the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Map Division compiled the map for a 50-inch globe that was to be given to President Roosevelt by Colonel William J. Donovan, the OSS Director. Instead, acting on a suggestion by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General George C. Marshall arranged to have one of the large globes presented to Prime Minister Winston Churchill and another to President Roosevelt as 1942 Christmas gifts from the Army. Ultimately, the Weber Costello Company of Chicago Heights, Illinois, produced some twelve or fifteen copies of the President's Globe between 1942 and 1955 when the company ceased operation. Churchill's globe is now at Chartwell and Roosevelt's is at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library. The story of these globes is based on the recollection of an individual who was involved in the map making.
Weber Costello (in our opinion) created some of the most beautiful Globes, especially in the Machine Age and Deco design style. Their creativity and superb map making skills produced models that today have become highly desirable by collectors world wide.
As the doors to the Weber Costello globe producing facility closed in the 1960s, the loss of one of the great Chicago Globe makers of the 20 Century was evident.
The globe itself is made of plaster, covered with 12 individual gores of paper representing the map. It is mounted dowel style onto a tri-legged lions paw styled base, which is made of cast iron and finished in a copper-bronze two-tone. The patina of the globe has aged to perfection, offering a beautiful warm look. Diameter of the globe is 8 inches with a total height of about 14 inches.
This model is in good condition and shows expected wear for its age. Colors are rich and details are crisp. Some rubbing, scuffing and soiling throughout. Restored indentation South East of Australia. The Base is in very good condition, no cracks or other damage. Please view pictures for details.
