Rare Norman Lindsay Signed Print
Rare Norman Lindsay Signed Print
This is an incredibly rare find! Signed facsimile collotype of In Vain the Christian in original frame. The artist is Norman Lindsay who carved out a career in Australia as an author before finding wider success as an artist. Lindsay authorized Chiswick Press (London) to produce around 30 of these prints in 1928 and then personally signed them in the lower right hand corner. This was the only time prints were made before the original was destroyed in a train fire while Lindsay was touring America in 1941.
More information on this rare print from Australian art dealer Odana Bloomfield:
"The frenzied activity of the throng in the foreground and the classical buildings on either side stretching into the distance, form the basis of the picture, but it is the soldier on horseback and the regal nude, eyes locked in some mystical embrace, who rivet our attention. Here the importance of the white lines is obvious and even though dense blacks fade into the palest of whites there is between the two extremes an extraordinary range of tone. Colour would be superfluous. This drawing is a technical tour de force."
