$525.00
This 16 inch Denoyer-Geppert Celestial Globe is a superb example of the mid-century modern design style, combined with outstanding craftsmanship. Majestic in size, bold in design and highlighting the Space Age Era, this magnificent piece is a rarely obtainable Object. The Adler Planetarium of Chicago has the same model as part of its collection, received in from Mr Denoyer and Mr Geppert personally. It was a gift, celebrating the Grand Opening of the museum in 1956.
As a desirable collectable piece, this model (also dated 1956) can be found at the Globe Museum of the National Library of Austria and the Whipple Museum of Scientific Instrument, part of Cambridge University in the UK.
The 16 inch diameter orb is covered with 12 individual, hand applied paper gores representing the celestial skies. The globe is mounted into a metal full meridian, finished in black. Nested into a cradle style wooden mount, the globe is removable. The map identifies constellations, nebulas, stars and more. The Horizon Ring is attached to the wooden base and identifies seasons, months and astrological figures. Globe and meridian can be removed from the base. Total height is 22.5 inches. Total diameter, including horizon ring is 21 inches. This is a magnificent piece! Some signs of wear and repair are visible only close up. One must remember, the artifact was once an educational tool!
This celestial sphere is a true Artifact, a grand piece to be part of one's exceptional collection.
