We found this fantastic model by Hammonds to be quite a novelty; a highly detailed inflatable globe! These were designed in the 1950’s as a way of producing high quality globes much more affordably. The significantly lighter globes could also be shipped cheaper too. They have all the design hallmarks of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s; they are instantly identified as Midcentury Modern artifacts.

During the 1950’s the globe industry experimented with many new materials to produce more economical models. Some very unusual globes appeared, including this one. Despite the lasting quality of these models, the line only stayed in production for a few years making these very scarce today.

The globe itself is made of very thick vinyl and can be inflated via the red valve at the north pole. We inflated the globe for 21 days and so far only a minimal loss of air. The orb offers classic retro graphics, the red valves a pop of color, and the base adds a nice Mid Century touch. Diameter of the globe is 14 inches with a total height of about 16 inches. The base is made of thin metal and will come unassembled. A simple screwdriver is all you’ll need to put it back together. Overall, this globe is very well preserved. The globe is dated in the lower right corner of the cartouche as can be seen in the photos. The detailed cartography confirms the age as well.

If you are looking for the rare, funky, and/or the unusual; this globe will meet your needs!
