A 1950s German spinning tin globe featuring Sputnik and Laika

$175.00
This c 1950s whimsical toy is a reminder of an era long gone and a fantastic Space Race Memorabilia as it features a lithographed image of Laika, the Sputnik 2 dog on the rocket. Laika (Russian: Лайка, literally meaning “Barker” was a Soviet space dog that became the first animal to orbit the Earth. She underwent training with two other dogs, and was eventually chosen as the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 that was launched into outer space on November 3, 1957. (wikipidia.org) This wind-up “space-toy” was made by Peter Niedermeier in post WW2 Nuremberg as he carried on with a longstanding German toy making tradition. Even though having survived two World Wars most German Tin Toy makers closed their doors by the late 1960s and 70’s as they were unable to compete with an industrious Japan. Overall size is 4x13x5.5” tall. Center unit of the toy which has lever is domed globe with lithographed continents along with large images of a jet plane and ocean liner. Attached to this by rods is a 3.5” long spaceship featuring Laika and 2” diameter satellite. Toy works and spins to give appearance of the spacecraft rotating the Earth. Unfortunately we do not have the original box. Of course this toy had to survive childhood and therefore shows some wear. The satellite is quite “rusty”. Otherwise, all is functional! Enjoy spinning satellites in orbit…retro style. $175 — Item : OTTINLEIKA50 - SOLD
