This terrestrial sphere is a splendid example of Victorian times, documenting colonial Empires one can only read of in History books today. An ever so delicately engraved map highlights the attention to detail German Globe makers of the 19 century had become known and admired for. This sphere does not identify its producer as there is no cartouche present, though the superb craftsmanship with beautiful coloring suggests itself to be a Heyman Globe with Kiepert cartography. Each color identifies a colonist nation and their conquered territories throughout the world. Superb attention to detail by the globe maker is evident throughout the map. A truly superb masterpiece when it comes to globe making. The ebonized and baluster turned fruitwood base with integrated compass adds magnificence to this elegant masterpiece. A truly interesting artifact! Description: The approximate 10 inch diameter pasteboard and plaster orb is covered with 12 individual paper gores and 2 polar calottes representing the map. Mounted axis style onto a metal connector, attached to a fruitwood, baluster turned and ebonized base with integrated, functional compass in the footing. Total height is approx.. 16.5 inches. Condition: Overall well preserved but does have soiling and spotting on the map throughout. Nevertheless details are crip and coloring is rich. Base is well preserved, age appropriate scuffing. Metal connecting bracket has minor, age appropriate corrosion. The age of the globe has been identified by the political borders displayed: German colonies are displayed in Africa, Panama has yet to gain independence, the Antarctic region is largely undefined.
