A c 1900 Atlas School Globe

A c 1900 Atlas School Globe

$495.00
This turn-of-the-century School Globe and had to endure years of Geography lessons. In spite or perhaps because of it we think this enchanting model offers the perfectly aged patina one looks for in a vintage item. It is still quite an exceptional Globe as it shares history of the past 110 years by displaying Empires one can only read of today. Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empire and European colonies are documented. Metropolitan centers of culture like Constantinople, Christiana and St. Petersburg are identified. The human quest to conquer is still evident throughout the map of this globe. The Polar Regions have yet to be explored. This is a rare globe, reflecting history and style of an era long gone. The age has been based on the map displaying Indian Territory in the US (1889-1907), Abyssinia in Africa is documented on the map (est 1896) but Orange Free State has not yet been established (1902). Little is known about the Globe maker. Atlas School Supply Company Globes have been found from the late 1800's to the turn of the Century. The globe making was outsourced to one of the great Chicago Globe makers of their time. Reviewing the map and details including isothermal lines, we believe this model was made by either Andrews –CF Weber or Rand McNally. 12 individual paper gores over an 8" diameter plaster orb. The map is detailed and in addition to political borders, rivers and more, it also shows finely printed mountain ranges and isothermal lines. The orb is mounted onto an elegant cast iron tri-legged base with art nouveau feel, finished in bronze and copper. Total height is about 14.5 inches. $495 - Item #: KS311AT1900 - SOLD
