Technical advancement is furthermore celebrated by documenting Short Wave Radio Stations and their call letters around the world as of c 1940, as World War 2 has erupted in Europe. Though this highly desirable terrestrial globe is not just a vintage scientific instrument but also an undeniable piece of art. The base represents the earliest version of what would become the most collected design among globe aficionados, the airplane. Offered more commonly in cast metal with chrome or bronze finish, this particular model is the rarest, made of solid wood. Undeniable Art Deco features are well represented in its minimalistic, Bauhaus favoring design of the base. Fluid, minimalistic lines of the wings compliment a bullet shaped body, representing speed of an airplane. In spite of not being in perfect condition, this is an exquisite piece to be part of any aviation or globe collection. If you are looking for the rarely obtainable, this artifact is for you. Description: The 12” diameter sphere is made of pasteboard. Representing a map of c 1940, the legend identifies various aviation routes, including Graf Zeppelin, Hindenburg, Lindbergh flight to Paris and more.. The half meridian is made of pot metal with dark silver finish and mounted onto a solid wooden base representing a Deco styled Airplane. Total height is about 14.5 inches. The hemispheres aged to different hues of patina. The base has some wear around the connecting part to the meridian. The finish of the meridian is worn and has flaked off in some areas.
