Hammonds of Brooklyn produced globes of unique design and exceptional elegance. Quickly his masterpieces became highly desirable during the early 20th Century. One may have considered him a trendsetter, offering world globes with decorative bases following the Art Nouveau and later American Art Deco style. Today his spheres are “must haves” to any sophisticated globe collection. This original design by Hammonds was offered only during the mid 1920s to early 1930s. Politically this elegant piece offers a glimpse at a post WW1 world, as new nations have risen out of old empires. Poland, Finland, Yugoslavia …just to name a few. However, the ever so mysterious Constantinople is still visible… This artifact will ensure hours of entertainment for the mind and is always a visual delight to the eye. Description: The 6 inch diameter orb is covered by twelve individual, hand applied paper gores and a polar calotte atop. The original time dial is present. Currents, steamship routes and political borders are identified on the map. The orb offers a perfectly aged patina with warm coloring. Combined with a baluster turned wooden base total height is about 10.5 inches. Condition: Overall well preserved, the globe has age appropriate wear present in form of spotting, soiling and rubbing. An old repair in form of “touch ups” is present in various areas but not very noticeable. Lets say this globe has a truly vintage look. Colors are rich, details 90% crisp. The base is well preserved, still offering the original elegant finish. A very minor crack is visible in the footing. The age of the Globe is based on political borders displayed, which are as follows: Europe is shown in a post WW1 world, based on the guidelines of the treaty of Versailles. New, independent nations like Poland, Finland and Yugoslavia are present. Former St Petersburg- Petrograd has been re-named Leningrad (1924). Constantinople is still visible (changed to Istanbul in 1939). The Japanese Empire has not yet conquered the Manchurian Region in China. (1932). Central Australia is visible. A state that existed only from 1926-31. A handsome, traditionally styled Artifact, this petite globe is certainly grand in history. Well packed, domestic shipping will be $10.00.
