1940 World War 2 terrestrial Globe with Jadeite Art Deco Depression Glass Base
$365.00
An elegant masterpiece combining interesting history with brilliant Art Deco design. Of up most rarity, the jadeite mount is what makes this scientific instrument a true object de art.
The map of this globe offers beautiful artistic details in addition to political display. The uncommon golden colored oceans show ships of the past, from Viking vessel and sailboats to frigates. The cartouche is in form of a shell, surrounded by a Mermaid and Poseidon (or Neptune?).
The mounting includes a base made of jadeite Depression Glass with deco details. It is a reflection of the shortage on metal during the war and creativity of replacement materials of that era. This globe, even or maybe because its imperfections offers a nice ambiance in just about any setting.
The map on this globe shows the struggle of globe makers keeping up with the constant change of political borders during WW2. A close look at Europe reveals a cost-effective approach by Rand McNally, there is an overprint detectable. The area of Austria and former Czechoslovakia shows a milky colored overlay, hiding previous borders and making it look as part of Germany instead.
This technique did not turn out to be as efficient as hoped and halted within a year. Instead, Rand McNally followed Replogles lead by issuing coupons with each globe, offering replacement gores once the war is over and final borders have been declared.
We will also provide a facsimile copy of the Rand McNally catalog advertisement for this model, called the Scout.
