A 1938 Nautical themed Globe with machine age styled art deco base This Rand McNally Indexed Terrestrial Art Globe offers exquisite nautical themed details. Romanticizing the era of exploration, majestic Frigates and other ships of famous Explorers are displayed as a Mermaid and Poseidon surround a shell forming cartouche. Rich coloring emphasizes details and political borders. Visual history displays Italian East Africa, which existed for only a few years, 1936-41. Europe is shown at the dawn of WW2 as Austria has been annexed (1938) by the German Empire though Czechoslovakia is not yet occupied (1939). The cradle style base reflects the art deco-machine age period with its detailed yet monochromatic design. Made of metal with a copper-bronze finish, the cradle is attached to a wooden base with space to place an atlas. A beautiful, nautical statement of history. Description: Diameter of the pasteboard orb itself is 12 inches, total height of the artifact is sixteen inches.The base is 13.75 inches by 8 inches. Overall very well preserved with minor scuffing and soiling. The base is solid and well maintained with minimal, age appropriate scuffing. Age has been based on political borders displayed, which are as follows: Political borders document the dawn of WW2. Austria has been annexed by the German Empire (1938) but Czechoslovakia is still independent (occupied 1939). Italian East Africa is displayed, which existed only a few years (1936-41).
