$425.00
Early explorers and major accomplishments of aviation are celebrated on this massive terrestrial globe from Weber Costello. The map is bold, playful, elegant and crammed with information, but what really makes this model stand out is the map of Europe. Germany is shown as having annexed Austria and the plot to invade Poland is surely underway. One of the darkest chapters in human history is just around the corner... Most globe makers did not update their maps during WW2 as the borders were constantly shifting. Instead, most choose to show the pre-war borders and that included separating Germany and Austria. As a result, there just are not too many examples left that show this critical moment in time. Description: The 16” diameter sphere is made of pasteboard and a thin layer of plaster. The map identifies such milestones in aviation as the Graf Zeppelin around the world trip and Lindbergh's flight to Paris. The ships of famous explorers such as Drake and Columbus are illustrated in the oceans and mythical sea beasts can also be found in addition to traditional political borders, capitals and so forth. Due to the large size of the globe, there are thousands of towns and cities labeled. The wooden base forms a cradle that allows the orb to rotate freely with no axis rod. A meridian ring denotes time of day and degrees. Total height of the artifact is approximately 19 inches. Condition: The globe is in good condition with only a few minor dings and scratches. All colors are bold and rich, and the illustrations are sharp and clear. The base has more issues as the paper on the meridian ring has a large section missing and the felt pads need to be replaced in the cradle. The finish on the wood is in good shape. Please see photos for details. The age of the globe has been determined by flight routes and political display, which is as follows: The most telling is that Austria is shown as annexed by Germany (1938) but Poland is still independent (invaded in 1939). Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are all still free countries until 1940. Manchuria is occupied by Japan and re-named Manchukuo (1932-41) while Iran is still shown as Persia instead (change 1935). Truly an exquisite artifact, sharing an important moment in time. SOLD $425 - Item #1217WCWWII38 Well packed, this massive globe will ship domestically for $75.
