Handsome 1927 German terrestrial Globe by Reimers with dated cartouche pre WW2
$698.00
Quite a handsome masterpiece, this terrestrial sphere is a fine display of elegance and sophistication. Majestic in size, the globe allows for you to view the world of 1927, as it rises out of the ashes of WW1.
The ever so delicately engraved map lets one discover the Empires of the past have fallen, including the Austro –Hungary, now divided into several countries including Austria, Hungary and the South Slavian Republic, which existed for only a blimp in time to shortly thereafter become Yugoslavia. The Russian Revolution has clearly succeeded as the former Russian Empire is now the USSR. Former German colonies in Africa are highlighted in bold red striping, displaying the new mandate of the Treaty of Versailles.
In spite of its imperfections, this majestic artifact will be a conversation starter wherever displayed.
About the manufacture:
Dietrich Reimers Verlag 1845 – 1960’s Berlin
Dietrich Reimer started his company in 1845 and began to produce globes in 1852 by taking over the globe manufacture Adami in 1852. Adami (1802-1874) continued to work for Reimer as a mapmaker. Kiepert took over his position and continued improving and producing Adami models. H.A. Hoefer became co owner of the company for a brief period (1868-95) and after Reimers left due to age, E. Vohesen ( 1853-1919) oversaw production. After his death the company became a public traded corporation. In addition to their own Globes, the Dietrich Reimers Verlag also produced models for Andrews and Steiner between WW1 and up until the later part of WW2, when the manufacturing facilities were completely destroyed (1944). The company was re-built in 1951 but never quite made it back to its supreme position in the globe market. After having created a vast variety of globes, from the early relief models, Induction, terrestrial and celestial globes, the Dietrich Reimer Verlag closed its doors for good sometime in the early 1960’s.
Description:
The 13 inch diameter orb is mounted into a brass numeric stamped half meridian. A very detailed map displays political borders, colonies, steamship and under water cable routes. Mountain ranges, rivers and lakes are also marked as are railway routes.
The meridian is attached to a solid wooden , partially ebonized base with metal weight on the bottom and architectural details. This is a very heavy model.
Total height is 25 inches.
Condition:
The base and meridian are very well preserved for its age, minor scuffing to the footing of the base and slight darkening to the brass. The map has suffered some loss in form of small white spots and rubbing throughout the globe (it did have to survive WW2 ) . Details are crisp, colors vivid with a beautiful vintage patina.
