An exceptional 1936 Machine Age illuminated Glass Globe
An exceptional 1936 Machine Age illuminated Glass Globe
$995.00
Until post WW1, the American Style was to follow the traditional design of the European Mother countries. However, influenced by the Art Deco Movement of France and the clean Geometric Bauhaus Development in Germany, US Design began to have a direction of its own, the American Modern aka Machine Age. Tear Drop and Bullet –shaped aerodynamic designs were not just used on forms of transportation but daily used objects, from vacuum cleaners to cars…and this terrestrial globe.
It is a superb example of the movement. Consisting of a classic streamline designed cast iron base and glass orb, offering a political map of 1936. This model features an electric lighting mechanism and offers an exquisite ambiance when illuminated.
Illuminated glass globes had been manufactured in the USA for a very short period, from 1935 to about 1960 when more economic plastics replaced the hand mounted glass spheres.
This fine Replogle illuminated model stands out, combining form and function at its best. Highly desirable among discerning collectors, the same model is part of a collection of the National Library of Austria and other museum systems.
There are no records of sales in public auction houses as this model is rarely offered for acquisition.
The hand blown glass globe is covered with 12 individual, hand applied paper gores. Oceans are in deep emerald green, land is shown in gold, green and orange tones. The orb is attached to a cast iron base, finished in silver. Diameter of the globe itself is 10 inches with a total height of about 13.5 inches. We will also provide a copy of the original patent for the mounting design.
This is truly an exceptional artifact.
