1930 Weber Costello- Bacon Gores
Some of the Chicago Globe makers outsourced quite often to Weber Costello for map gores. It is remarkable to have obtained this beautiful model, identified to be a Weber Costello but its gores had been imported from G.W Bacon & Co. of London. The map is very detailed and shows Europe during the short peaceful period between WW1 and 2. One of the last hand made Costello globes with Bacon gores and difficult to obtain in any condition. The splendid Nouveau base is a playful reflection of the European Jugenstil era.
12 individual coated paper gores are hand laid onto a plaster sphere. The globe is attached to a cast iron Nouveau base with copperized finish. The entire model is approx. 18" tall, with a 12" diameter.
This Globe is in truly superb condition. The orb has a beautifully aged patina with only minor scuffing to the varnish. No losses to the paper. The base is in also in fine condition, no cracks or rust, some minor scratch marks.
The age of the globe has been identified by the political borders displayed: Persia is displayed. Istanbul with Constantinople in parenthesis. Manchuria has not yet been invaded and re-named. Central Australia is displayed.
