A handsome 1929 Dietrich Reimers Erdglobus with dated cartouche
$725.00
Dietrich Reimers was one of the most prolific German Globe makers of the 19th and early 20th century. In 1852 the firm of Carl Adami & Co, Berlin was taken over by the publishing house Dietrich Reimer (1818-1899) who employed the talents of the highly innovative Heinrich Kiepert, a well known Geographer and Cartographer at the time. This foundation and then partnership establish the company of Verlag Dietrich Reimer as one of the very best within the globe making industry. To this day Reimers Globes are highly prized among collectors.
The typical German attribute of attention to detail and refined map making skills are clearly demonstrated on this model. Note the dated cartouche. It was uncommon to display a print date unless at war time to document advancement of military troops as means of propaganda. However, 1929 was a peaceful post WW1 Era.
German East and South-West Africa is visible to be under the "VOELKER-BUND" mandate. Germany surrendered these colonies after WW1 as a part of the treaty of Versailles.
Also of political interest, note the description of the post WW1 to be Yugoslavia, which is identified as the South Slav. Republic. An unusual description.
The paste board orb is covered with 12 individual, hand applied paper gores and two polar calottes. Diameter is 11 inches. The map has a perfectly aged patina, rich in color and detail. Mounted into a brass numeric stamped half meridian which is attached to a beautiful, baluster turned fruitwood base. Total height of this elegant model is a majestic 23 inches.
Abrasions and scuffs to the orb perhaps indicative of the harsh environment it survived during a particularly tough era in Germany, lending to this globe's substantial character. This Globe is a superb and valuable addition to any collection, based on the fascinating political display and handsome design.
A sophisticated model for sophisticated collectors.
