It is the stand which transforms this scientific instrument into a piece of art. Combining form and function at its best, the heavy cast iron base offers playful Art Nouveau-Victorian details while the map shares a history lesson, reflecting the Great Depression. Most interestingly it is apparent that Weber Costello updated the individual Gores via typewriter to represent political changes of 1932-35, including the occupation of Manchuria and being re-named Manchukuo and Persia changing to Iran. Italian occupation in Africa is noted (1935) while Central Australia is still visible (1926-31). More likely Weber Costello had imported the gores in previous years but not all utilized as 18" diameter globes were only made to order and due to cost not very common. To not waste and still attempting to provide an accurate projection, the decision was made to simply type the changes onto the map. American Ingenuity at its best... If you are looking for the rarely obtainable, this artifact is for you.
